Homework in Science

The department adheres to the school-wide Show My Homework usage policy.  Homework serves the purpose of either consolidating learning that has taken place in class or it prepares students for the next topic they will be learning about.  An emphasis is placed on independent learning with students being required to stretch themselves both in class and at home.  The level of difficulty and the amount of homework increases as students move up through the school.

Key Stage 3

KS3 students are set three pieces of homework a fortnight which can be self, peer or teacher assessed when submitted in class.

Key Stage 4

Double Science (legacy GCSE) and Combined Science (NEW 9-1 GCSE) students are set three pieces of homework a fortnight which can be self, peer or teacher assessed.

Triple Science (legacy GCSE) and Separate Science (NEW 9-1 GCSE) students are set six pieces of homework a fortnight.  This greater workload is intended to support the students with the rigors of the more challenging Triple Science/Separate Science courses.

Key Stage 5 (Year 12 and 13)

Students are set homework at the end of most lessons to either consolidate their learning or to prepare them for the next topic they will be learning about.  An emphasis is placed on independent learning with students being required to stretch themselves both in class and at home.  After its successful implementation in Biology last year, this year the department has invested in the 'Flipped Learning' model of setting homework.  This involves students completing the foundation of their learning outside of lesson time, before using the time with their subject teacher to establish a deeper understanding of concepts and contexts.  This is an initiative that has been shown to promote independence and a more sophisticated understanding of the subject.
